Tara Marie Nolan - Miss Cork 2018

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a model when I grew up. I made my Dad watch Barbie movies on a loop. He still has the scars!

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I am presently in my first year at CIT studying Interior Architecture. It’s a four-year course and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. Choosing your career so young is really difficult and yet so important. After I graduate I hope to travel with my degree and work developing my knowledge and gaining experience of architecture that I can bring home to Cork and I would be so proud to someday have worked on a major Cork project.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

Having an artistic licence to be creative and inventive every day. I am very passionate about design and love learning something new.

What motivates you?

Everyone has ambition and wants to do well. I really enjoy the career path that I have chosen and I believe that when you are working at something that you really enjoy it is easy to be motivated. For me the trick to motivation is to enjoy what you do.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?

Take care of yourself. Eat well and exercise. Your health is probably the greatest asset that we have and so often we take it for granted. It is also important to try new things and not to shy away from opportunities that come your way.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Architecture is something I have always been interested in from an early age.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

Without a doubt it would have to be being crowned Miss Cork 2018. I had the most wonderful time taking part in the competition and got the chance to meet so many great people. The entire experience was an achievement for me. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new. That in itself is an achievement and every other girl who did the same all achieved something new from Miss Cork.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

I have to say my Dad Kieran is my biggest inspiration. He inspired me to always believe in myself, to put myself out there, to work hard and to get a good education. He is a great business man and father who knows the true meaning of hard work and dedication. If I grow up to be half the person my Dad is I will be doing a good job.

What is the life dream now?

To be a great Miss Cork 2018 and a good representative in Miss Ireland for Cork. I am so honoured to have been chosen to represent Cork and I hope I do the Rebels proud. I would be delighted looking back on my life to have raised a happy family, with my Brad Pitt look alike husband, in our modest seaside villa. But seriously, family is very important to me coupled with the personal satisfaction of having had a successful career.

How do you switch off?

I really enjoy a good TV show and my favourite at the moment is ‘Peaky Blinders’. However exams and study take up a lot of my time and so I’m still only up to season three. No spoilers please.

What is your favourite Cork memory?

Being crowned Miss Cork 2018. I could not have imagined at the outset how game changing winning the Miss Cork crown has been for me. We all have watched ‘America's Next Top Model’ and such shows on TV but these shows don’t convey the comradery and friendships that develop behind the scenes and the sense of achievement and pride to represent Cork at a National level.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

My happy place in Cork is Barleycove beach. I remember many summers there with my family and all the good times we have had as children playing and messing on the beach and learning how to swim, and not to forget the chips on the way home!

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

I once read this quote 'Don’t try and fit in when you were born to stand out'. These days especially it is easy to get carried away with social media.

Everyone wants to be like the models on the screen. Don’t try and be like everyone else just because it is in fashion. If everyone dressed the same, talked the same and acted the same the world would be such a boring place.

When are you at your happiest?

I am always at my happiest when I am surrounded by my family and friends. Family holidays, Christmas gatherings and special occasions are the times that I look back on fondly.

Any regrets?

Regrets are not something I personally fret on. Every decision can’t always be correct (except for Mom), but when you do make a mistake you learn from it as long as you make your decisions honestly and with good intent.

What is your hidden talent?

Perhaps that I love to sing. Music is a huge part of my life and being able to sing is something that I cherish.

However, I do wish to step out of my comfort zone even more in the next year and push myself to pursue more with music.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I have terrible toes, thanks Dad!
