When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

I wanted to be in the IRA but my Dad said I’d be useless because I was cowardly by nature, so I started to look at comedy then.

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I was fat and weird in school, so in order to protect myself from jibes, I’d take the piss out of fellas before they’d take the piss out of me. It was very much a case of ‘mock or be mocked’ and it still stands to me today!

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

When people sometimes aggressively say to me outside comedy clubs: ‘You’re a comedian? Say something funny, so?’ I absolutely live for those moments.

What motivates you?

Revenge.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

A non-courageous role in the IRA? Head of poems, or something? Head of archives these days, I suppose.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

I made my daughter pee and poo herself laughing one time when she was a toddler. I’ve never felt better about myself.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

In no particular order: Charles Haughey, my dad, Michelangelo (Turtles).

What is the life dream now?

To stay in out of the way and mind my own business.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Don’t, under any circumstances, start drinking Kopparberg Mixed Berry cider; it’ll blow the head and arse off you, boy.

How do you switch off?

If it’s switched on, switch it the other way. If it’s already off, stay in out of the way and leave it alone.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

My favourite past place is the Queen’s Old Castle. Present - I told you earlier, Patrick Street. Why won’t you listen to me?

What is your favourite Cork memory?

Shop lifting in the Queen’s Old Castle.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

“Less you, more me” - Tadhg Hickey, 1982

When are you at your happiest?

When I’m yawning.

Do you have any regrets?

This interview. The length of it!

What is your hidden talent?

I can cry myself awake.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I’m a 16th century French Lord.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

Anything else?! I’m Alan Shattered from ye, guys!
