When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort. I’ve always loved creating and using my imagination, so I’m very impressed that small me always knew best!

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I started playing the piano aged eight and would get bored of practicing my pieces, so instead I would write my own. Writing songs became my favorite past time and was something I did everyday. After school, I began studying at the Cork School of Music. Performing happened naturally as all my original material began to build up. I now write and record as an independent artist.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

Creating something abstract that people intuitively understand. Music works to amplify human experience and bring us more in touch with ourselves. If that’s the gift I can give to people, then that’s all the joy I need.

What motivates you?

A strong desire to create something of beauty and meaning.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

I love the quote by Lao Tzu: “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” Being a teenager is difficult as you’re trying to find your way and that often means trying to mould yourself to fit in. Be an individual and don’t follow the herd. I would also tell her that intelligence is beautiful and something to be celebrated.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

Teaching. I teach music to young people and have found so much joy in it. It’s great to be able to share the gift of music with my students and hopefully it becomes something they find a lot of joy in too.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

There’s no one ultimate achievement, but instead loads of little acheivements. They remind me of colourful scraps of paper I keep adding to a collage I will spend the rest of my life trying to complete.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

Without a doubt, my family – they put you in your place and will tell you the truth because they have your best interests at heart. My mom has a saying that has stuck with me – ‘You are above no one and you are below no one.’ She’s influenced me a lot.

What is the life dream now?

To continue learning, creating and performing.

How do you switch off?

Audiobooks and interesting podcasts.

What is your favourite Cork memory?

I love the lights in the city at Christmas time!

What is your favourite place in Cork?

Kilmurry woods.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

‘Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.’ – Carl Jung.

When are you at your happiest?

Sitting by the piano.

Any regrets?

Most definitely.

What is your hidden talent?

Basketball.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I’ve a fake tooth.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

My new single ‘Let Me In’ is out now.
