Blarney historical lecture

Blarney and District Historical Society will hold an illustrated lecture entitled ‘Revolution on the Airwaves’ this Thursday 12 January at 8pm at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál (Blarney Secondary School). Farranree Environment Group

Lecture on West Limerick

The Cork Literary and Scientific Society will host a lecture by Canon George Salter on interesting aspects of the West Limerick area in the Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place on Thursday 19 January at 8pm. Non-members welcome, tickets €8.

A Night of Adventure

Wild Frontiers Adventure Travel will host ‘A Night of Adventure’ in aid of the Hope Foundation on Wednesday 1 February at Fota Island Resort at 7pm. The event is designed to inform attendees about some of the world’s least-known tourist destinations. Speakers will be former champion jockey and polar adventurer Richard Dunwoody and expedition leader and head of group tours Marc Leaderman. Cork book on Life FM

‘The Ark of Dun Ruah’ a children’s book by Cork author Maria Burke, will broadcast as a radio drama series on 93.1 Life FM from Monday 23 January. The nine episodes will air weekdays until Thursday 2 February and will be played at three times throughout the day - at 8.40am, 2pm and 9pm.

Talk on Frongoch Camp

Tim Crowley will present a historical lecture on Frongoch Prison Camp at 8pm next Monday 16 January in Ballincollig Rugby Club. The lecture, organised by Muskerry Local History Society, will discuss the camp, which held almost 2,000 detainees after the 1916 Rising, including some who would go on to become key leaders in the War of Independence.

UCC Strauss Ball

The 33rd UCC Strauss Ball will take place at the Cork International Airport Hotel on Thursday 2 February at 6.30pm. The evening will begin with a Prosecco reception, followed by dinner and ballroom dancing. The Cork Pops Orchestra, conducted by RTÉ Lyric FM’s Evelyn Grant, will provide the music. Full tickets are €40 and afters tickets are €20. The event has been organised by UCC’s Choral, Journalism, Knitting, Dramat and Music Societies. Contact strauss@uccsocieties.ie.

Nature boxes for Doneraile

Cork Nature Network, Mallow Men’s Shed, Doneraile National School and the Office of Public Works will erect bird and bat boxes in Doneraile Country Park this Friday 13 January at 11.30am. The boxes were built by members of the Mallow Men’s Shed. There will be a talk for the children by Cork Nature Network Educational Officer, Lorna Farrell, about the importance of wildlife on the morning. All welcome.
