Haemochromatosis info

The Irish Haemochromatosis Association will hold an information meeting at Rochestown Park Hotel on Thursday 30 March at 7.30pm. The organisation wants to raise awareness of the condition among the general public. Guest speaker at the event will be Dr Orla Crosbie, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital. All are welcome.

Clonakilty lecture

Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage will hold a lecture on the U–260, a German submarine which sank off Glandore Harbour towards the end of World War Two, on Thursday 23 March, at 8pm at the Clonakilty Parish Centre. The illustrated lecture will be delivered by Brendan Cahill. Mr Cahill has dived the wreck on several occasions and will show film footage from these underwater visit as part of his talk. All are welcome.

Bandon Over 60s

A Kerry lady living in Carrigaline has won the Bandon heat of the Over 60s Talent Competition. Eileen Cullaty, an administrator at Dominican Retreat Centre in Montenotte, took the top spot on the night. Tickets are now on sale for the semi-final on 7 May at Pro Musica Oliver Plunkett Street and Blackpool Shopping Centre. They are €15 each, with all proceeds donated to the Irish Heart Foundation.

Beaumont Quarry clean-up

Cork Nature Network (CNN) is holding regular clean-ups of Beaumont Quarry near Ballintemple. The former limestone quarry supports cave habitats, dry calcareous grassland, wet grassland, mixed semi-natural woodland and scrub and exposed rock. The CNN is looking for volunteers to help conserve this urban oasis. The next clean-up will take place this Saturday 25 March, starting from the old Spar shop on Beaumont Drive at 2pm. Bru Columbanus dress sale

There will be a Pre-Loved Dress and Handbag Sale this Saturday 25 March at Bru Columbanus, Cardinal Way, Wilton between 10am and 3pm. Items will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, so shoppers are advised to get there early to bag a bargain. The organisers are currently seeking donations of handbags and dresses. SeandunMacra news

Almost 30 people made the trip to at Mondello Park for the recent Seandun Macra na Feirme Drift Day. Seandun also organised a make-up masterclass at Inglot at Mahon Point.

Coming up shortly on the Seandun social calendar is a trip to Awesome Walls in Cork to go wall-climbing on Tuesday 28 March. See the Seandun Macra Facebook page for further information.

Scór na bPáistí final

There was talent galore at the final of Scór na bPáistí in Riverstick Hall recently.

Adjudicators Flor Delea, David Daly and Seán Walsh were very complimentary to the competitors in the ten categories.

Bean ‘a Tí Kathleen Lowney kept the show going smoothly throughout and compliments were paid to all the teachers, mentors and parents who helped and encouraged the children to participate and to reach such a high standard.

The overall cup was shared between Summercove and Belgooly, who were presented with the Maria Newman Cup by John Newman.

The Olibheár de Barra Cup for the best Ceol Úirlise (Instrumental Music) went to Ballinadee National School.
