Ballincollig restarts the heart

Thursday, 5th February, 2015 12:00am

Ballincollig is set to 'Restart the Heart' was a special fundraising initiative that will see three life saving defibrillators made available to the local community on 24/ 7 basis in the next three months.

The joint collaboration between Optimal Chiropractic and Ballincollig Business Association will kick off next Monday 9 February with Optimal Chiropractic offering first time patients the opportunity to avail of a reduced consultation fee of €25, with all money going directly to the purchase of the town's only 24 hour accessible community defibrillators.

This will be the first campaign to be run by local Ballincollig businesses to raise enough money to put three life saving defibrillators around the town which has a population of more than 20,000 people. The idea for the 'Restart The Heart' was born from the realisation that there is no defibrillator readily available in Ballincollig, on a 24 hour basis.

"Ballincollig Business Association is delighted to support such a worthwhile initiative. While we know of a number of defibs located in businesses in the area, it has become clear that none of the existing ones are available outside of the trading hours of their current locations. Not only do we need this service on a 24 hour basis, but we need to initiate an awareness campaign highlighting all locations where they exist, so that in the event of a crisis, they can be easily put into use," said Emer Cassidy, Chairperson of Ballincollig Business Association.

"This is a really important campaign for the town and the people of Ballincollig. The defibrillators will be made available around the town as soon as targets are reached to pay for them. Contact numbers will be put on the boxes holding the defibrillators, which will have password protected locks to ensure the equipment is secure," said Dr. Benjamin Martin of Optimal Chiropractic.
