Mount Cara in Blackpool has a new approved provider.

New provider to take over Mount Cara

“The future of Mount Cara is ensured.”

Those were the words of the Chairperson of the Board of Management of Mount Cara, Dr John Sheehan, as the board announced this week that the care of the residents was further secured. It follows approval by the Health Information and Quality Authority for Michael O'Shea, of Corpus Christi Nursing Home, to become the new registered provider for Mount Cara.

This came into effect on Monday.

The facility for older people on Redemption Road in Blackpool, was due to close but after many months of vigils, unhappiness and a Save Mount Cara campaign, the board of Mount Cara told residents and staff in October that the centre would not be winding down as previously planned.

In seeking a solution to the proposed closure of Mount Cara, the safety and welfare of the residents was always the primary consideration, said Dr Sheehan.

He added: “I would like to thank all the residents, staff and the wider community for your support and understanding over the past 30 years but especially over the past year. I was deeply touched by the support shown by residents, their families, staff and the wider community for Mount Cara.” Dr Sheehan, who is also a Fianna Fáil councillor, concluded: “I would also like to thank the board for the ongoing work and support. This is a good day for Mount Cara.”

Mount Cara will come under the Fair Deal Scheme and will start admitting residents again shortly.
