Get ready for those dressier occasions

Yes, they are back with a bang and with it comes the question of what do I wear?

It’s easy when we are in the zone of event dressing, with something always in the wardrobe that we can rely on, but after a major hiatus, we are left questioning what works when it comes to those dressier occasions.

More often than not our dresses that we kept in the wardrobe in case of a wedding guest emergency have now become a bit snug after two years of just hanging in the wardrobe. Not only that but our personal style has also changed having spent the last while dressing that bit more casually.

We are also that little bit savvier when it comes to our occasion wear budget and want something reasonably priced that we are going to get more than one wear of.

The so called rules of dressing up have also changed in that really there are no rules and you can wear whatever you like but with this freedom also comes its own set of challenges and you’ve got to put your own personal stamp on what you wear.

One failsafe option is a midi dress with a sandal, blazer on top and complete with a headband. It’s such an easy look to piece together but always looks smart enough for an event.

Of course, it goes without saying that a floral print is an absolute classic but don’t be afraid to go for polka dot or even an animal print. Think about your accessories and add pops of colour with shoes or handbag.

When it comes to headbands either match the print of the dress or go for a contrast; both work well so the choice is yours. There are so many options of midi dresses out there and all budgets are catered for. There are some particularly nice options in New Look that won’t break the bank but will make a statement.

Another absolutely classic look is a little black dress or LBD. You can’t go wrong with a black dress if you want to look chic or elegant. It’s a timeless look and makes a great base for whatever style you like.

Keep it classic with some simple accessories or go wild and layer on the jewellery for dramatic effect. If you fancy some colour instead opt for a single colour block and create a contrast with your accessories or go tonal for a more subtle look. Not everyone loves print and that’s ok too.

Something I’ve noticed recently about events I’ve been at is a definite move towards suiting as an alterative to the dress as not everyone feels comfortable wearing a guna.

I am loving all the suits on the high street at the moment with River Island having a great selection. Bright bold colours are very much the order of the day and in a more slouchy, relaxed fit.

The suit is particularly great because you have so many styling options to dress it down and integrate it into your wardrobe afterwards.

Just add your favourite strappy heel and a simple cami underneath and you’ve got a chic look suitable for any event.
