Setting a blaze(r) to spring

Spring is one of my favourite times of the year.

It’s the perfect time when the weather is just right, and we can shed a few layers in our outfits. It also means we get to wear lighter jackets and I can once again crack out my favourite blazers.

The blazer is one of the most useful items you can have in your wardrobe, and I’ve collected some high street and vintage pieces over the years that I pull out each season.

Did anyone else go through a phase in the early 2000s where they wore nothing but blazers, striped t-shirts, denim shorts, tights and white trainers? I was living in London at the time and the look was very Amy Winehouse in Camden.

I wore a blazer so often I actually had to take a break from them for a couple of years but now I can safely say we have made up and are great pals again.

Not all blazers are created equally and there are so many different styles and fits from longline to cropped, single and double breasted, that it’s essential you try on a few to get the right style for you.

I also would look at colour and if you haven’t really worn blazers before then I would opt for a neutral blazer first like black, navy or cream.

I really advise having a white or cream blazer in the wardrobe as it’s one of my go-tos when trying to find a cover up for a dressier outfit.

It also can really lift and brighten a darker look and bring it more into spring while also being the perfect partner for light wash denim.

Black and navy look great with darker denim and can make even jeans and t-shirt combination look that little bit more put together.

Once you have these basics mastered, you can add more colour and print if you so wish. One of my most worn blazers is a Kelly green longline blazer bought years ago in Zara with white buttons. I love to wear it with colourful print t-shirts underneath and some tailored black trousers and a sock boot. Very simple and comfortable but looks effortlessly dressy. It also lifts a denim outfit and works particularly well with gold accessories.

As the blazer is a tailored item, it’s important to get the fit right. I particularly like a single-breasted style which is a classic and works well if you have a larger bust.

It just really works on so many different body shapes. The double-breasted is another popular style and with its structure and shape really is a statement piece.

I find this style for me works better if I tie the buttons whereas I would leave the single breasted open at all times. Cropped is another style which is popular for the spring and when going for this style, I would recommend choosing one that stops at your waistline to make it super flattering and if you’re petite then this style will work really well for you.

One of my favourite styles at the moment is the more oversized boyfriend fit and I find personally being 5’3, this works best for me when I wear something more streamlined and fitted underneath to add balance.

I also like to roll up the sleeves of an oversized blazer just to show some skin and to give it a more styled look.

Play around with the blazers you have at home and try styling them in different ways to give them a fresh look.
