Fantastic Flavours is much more than great ice cream

Thursday, 17th October, 2019 8:49am

Youghal’s Fantastic Flavours Ice Cream Parlour recently won another major award, with the small family-owned business picking up a European gong this time.

It was recently named as the winner of the Finance Monthly M&A Awards 2019 for Best New Franchise – European Union, confirming it as one of the most innovative artisan food producers in Europe.

Artisan ice cream maker Miceál O’Hurley and his wife Oksana Shadrina built Fantastic Flavours Ice Cream Parlour as a labour of love.

Miceál, who had a varied background in the military and politics had been making ice cream as a hobby since 1983. Oksana, a Ukrainian, had been a senior business and customer service trainer with one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world.

Together, they have pioneered an innovative business model that promises the reliability and support infrastructure of a corporate franchise while preserving the appeal of a local, small, artisanal retail shop.

Established in Youghal, Miceál and Oksana set themselves apart by revolutionising a staple food product – ice cream.

Recognising that the industry had become saturated with mass-produced products laden with artificial ingredients, Miceál’s time-honoured recipes relying on fresh, pure Irish milk and cream.

Oksana concentrated on bringing five-star customer service to the casual, family dining experience.

Together, they have achieved a new model for producing an artisanal product and serving it in a manner that is relaxing and professional.

With more than 72 flavours of handmade, artisan ice cream, Fantastic Flavours Ice Cream Parlour has earned its accolades including the Food Awards Ireland - Dessert Outlet of the Year - 2017 and the Business Cork Customer Service Person of the Year Award - 2018.
