Support your body when breastfeeding

The benefits of breastfeeding are well known but the practice itself can be incredibly tough on a mother’s body.

Pain and discomfort can take away from precious moments with your newborn or cut short the breastfeeding journey entirely.

Covid-19 has seen breastfeeding support groups nationwide suspended until further notice, leaving some new mums unsupported as they navigate the process.

From its experience with lactation consultants, midwifes and thousands of women, Multi-Mam has some tips and advice for a more enjoyable and prolonged breastfeeding experience.

Get comfortable

Spend some time cuddling with baby before feeding, this will help you find a comfortable position, relax and level their head so that baby can attach to the entire areola and not just the nipple. Milk is expressed by baby suckling on the areola, when suckling on the nipple alone it presses against the roof of baby’s mouth, this is what can cause pain and discomfort to mum, so a deep latch is important.

Establish a feeding area

Once you settle down to feed baby it can be hard to do anything else so make sure you are prepared. Gather together a collection of breastfeeding essentials such as a power bank for your phone, healthy snacks, water bottle, compresses, tissues, burp cloth and the remote control!

Protect and prepare

Continuing to breastfeed once you have started is essential to prevent mastitis and blocked ducts, especially during the period of engorgement following birth. Multi-Mam Compresses are great when used proactively, applied to the breast before feeding they provide a protective layer between nipple and baby, maintain the fluid balance of the skin and most importantly allow mum to enjoy feeding pain free.

Prevent infection

Changing of brassieres daily and applying compresses after each feed is vital in the prevention of infection on the skins surface. If pain does not subside after 72 hours, call your GP as it may instead be an infection that requires antibiotics.

Manage your skin

Breastfeeding is rough on skin and no matter how prepared mum is, it can take a toll. Having strategies to move past these is essential for baby but also mum’s wellbeing. The most common complications experienced are dried, cracked and irritated nipples and will be painful for a few days but this can be helped by experimenting with feeding positions.

Try not to worry

Many mums will agree, this is the hardest tip to put in to practice! The emphasis put on the importance of breast feeding for baby’s development, can sometimes come at a cost to mothers. Tender easily cracked and bleeding nipples are normal, struggling to get baby to attach properly is experienced by so many mums. Try to go easy on yourself where possible. You are doing fantastic.
