Kitchen gadgets – who doesn’t love them?

Not sure how our mothers and grandmothers survived without any slicers, dicers and mixers but I am always on the lookout for new ideas. Here is a little list of new gadgets that might be the perfect gift for the food lover in your life:

Textured rolling pin: they are not new but now you can get rolling pins with Christmas designs. Rolling out cookie dough with these textured pins will make your cookies look like perfect spekulatius.

Cast Iron Smoker for the BBQ: With the weather we had this summer, the BBQ will hopefully be dusted off again in summer 2019. The cast iron smoker has a water container and a tray for the chippings. Place it on your BBQ, add the meat and you will be the star of the fire pit.

Clearview Toaster: I came across this toaster while researching. As the name suggests, this toaster has a window so that you can watch your toast brown nicely. The marketing ploy is that you will never have burnt toast – I just turn down the dial on mine.

Cartoon egg mould: You can trust Japan to come up with some cute ideas. The egg mould comes shaped as hearts, stars, fish, teddy and bunnies. You simply place your boiled, peeled egg into the mould, place it in water for 10 minutes and your egg comes out shaped as a bunny. I can see kiddies being very popular during lunch break in school!

Ben & Jerry’s Pint Lock: Love your ice cream and hate to share? Ben & Jerry heard you and came out with a padlock for their pint size tubs. You have to enter a number code to access the ice cream. Only downfall is the fact that you can simply turn the tub over and open the bottom.

Kilner Butter Churner: Once in every farm household, the butter churner jar is back. Simply pour cream into the jar, cover and start turning the paddle. After a few minutes you end up with your own homemade butter.

Pot Stirrer: Yes, there is such a thing as an automatic stirrer. One stands by itself and rotates around the pot while another version can be attached on the rim and the extended arm rotates the stirrer.

Tefal Cook4Me Connect: The future of cooking is here. Activate the app on your tablet or smartphone and send a recipe to the cooker and et voila, you can prepare stews, soups, rice etc. Called the start of the smart kitchen, this gadget might appeal to technology fans as well.

Apart from the butter churner, I don’t think I would be tempted to add any of the gadgets to my repertoire (saying that, I have an old glass jar butter churner already) but if it gets people to start preparing their food from scratch, I am all for it.

As a disclaimer I have to admit that I did my research online and not sure if any of the above is available in any of Cork’s wonderful shops. Head to Delia’s Cook Shop or Brennan’s first before spending your money online – they might be able to get any gadgets for you.
