Brighten up the front door

Wednesday, 14th November, 2018 4:46pm

By Margaret Griffin

Red is all around as the festive season draws closer and it’s the perfect colour to brighten up any front door.

Leucothe Scarletta

This is a wonderful evergreen plant to will reward you all year round. It is a compact shrub that feels very comfortable on the patio, giving colour all year round. The young glossy leaves are dark purple, turning green in spring, and a glorious deep red in winter.

Leucothoe is a beautiful ornamental shrub that can be used as a ground cover plant or in a flower pot or container. You will fall in love with this shrub - it will look great at your front door.

Skimmia Japonica Obsession

Unlike traditional skimmia japonica varieties, Skimmia Japonica Obsession is hermaphrodite; therefore this hardy, easy to grow evergreen has two superb seasonal features – it berries and flowers at the same time. It is ideal for brightening patio pots and garden borders though autumn, winter and spring. In autumn, it has long-lasting red berries in combination with dense russet coloured panicles which open to sweetly scented, white star-shaped flowers in spring.

Obsession is ideal for bringing colour to patio pots. As a shrub, it loves the environment a pot has to offer, especially if you give it lots of food.

Skimmia Temptation

Temptation is a skimmia with a difference. The plants are self-fertile, so only one plant is needed for the fruit to develop, so all plants of Temptation produce berries without another plant nearby for pollination. The other problem with some of the older varieties is that although they may start small, they eventually become uncomfortably tall for many modern gardens. Tempation is shorter, and more bushy, so makes a more effective garden plant.

The perfect pot for the festive season:

- Pot of your choice

- Westland Ericaceous Compost

- Horticultural grit

- 1 x Skimmia Obsession or Leuchote Scarletta

- 3 to 5 x red or white cyclamen (depending on size of pot)

- 1 x Trailing Ivy

- Battery operated pin wire lights with a timer

How to plant

Put a flat stone or slate over the drainage hole of a pot. Fill the pot with a mixture of half grit and half compost. Add some slow release ericaceous feed. Skimmia or Leuchote can be planted at the back with the three or five cyclamen to one side and the Trailing Ivy on the other.

Plant the cyclamen high. When you are happy with the planting, get you battery operated lights. Make sure they have a timer on them so you won’t have to remember to turn them off. My favourites are the pin wire time lights. These will give your pot a sparkle and a real welcome!

For lots of festive ideas, join us at Griffins every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am. This Saturday, it is about festive fireplace mantles. The event is free and booking is required.

The countdown for Christmas is definitely on as Griffins lights up their Christmas lights on Sunday 18 November at 5pm. There will be wonderful carol singing by the Magical Macroom Choir from 4pm. The lights will be officially switched on by Sanita Puspure and Minnie and Mickey Mouse, in aid of Macroom Community Hospital.
