Thursday, 29th November, 2018 8:59am

Applications for a fund offering grants to support community food-growing projects opened on Monday.

The Energia & GIY (Grow it Yourself) Get Ireland Growing Fund 2019 has invited community groups and voluntary organisations from across Cork to apply for grants between now and 18 January next year when the fund closes.

The Energia Get Ireland Growing Fund, which will draw from a funding pool of €75,000, will be split across three categories, Sow, Grow and Harvest, with awards ranging from €500 to €2,000 with one group selected to receive €5,000.

With the fund Energia and GIY will support at least 86 community food growing groups from across the island of Ireland.

This will be the sixth year that the fund has been made available with over €410,000 having been awarded since the fund began.

Launching the initiative on Monday, founder of GIY, Michael Kelly, said: “We are looking forward to rewarding the community champions who are putting food back at the heart of their communities.

“The fund is one of the most creative awards in the area of food, and it is a real privilege to know that we can really help to make the most incredible food growing projects a reality for a huge number of people across Ireland.”
