It’s the same thing every new year. You set goals to eat better, get more exercise, maybe even get more sleep. You want a healthier you.

But what if you could do something for 2019 that improves your health and the health of your family?

The air quality in your home or office — two places you spend more time than anywhere else — is a major factor when it comes to your overall health.

This might be one of the easiest resolutions to keep because it doesn’t involve getting rid of anything. Plants are amazing for improving indoor air quality.

Adding some green plants to your home can not only help you breathe better, but it adds major style points, too. To purify air, think one large plant for every 100 square feet in your home, or two smaller ones for the same effect.

It has an exceptional reputation as a healing plant. If you scratch yourself, try putting the juice of its leaves on your injury. I did and it worked wonders. Wouldn’t it be marvellous to have such a miraculous plant handy at all times?

Besides its function as a soothing gel, aloe also helps to keep your home free from benzene, which is commonly found in paints and certain chemical cleaners.

The purifying properties of this flower are formidable. They can rid the air of the xylene that is usually found in furniture glues and house paints. Orchids are incredibly decorative, but since they release loads of fresh oxygen at night, they’re ideal in the bedroom to help detox your lungs from our busy daily life.

Peace Lilies are solemnly elegant with white spathes that are simple to tend. The evergreen herbaceous perennial plant, which also goes by the name of Spathiphyllum, neutralises toxic gases like carbon monoxide, and removes volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene in the air. It may also reduce airborne microbes and increase humidity – perfect for dry rooms with central heating in winter.

Snake plants are low maintenance and beautiful enough to keep in your bedroom, living room, or anywhere in the house, all year round. They need very little care, can grow in any climate, and purify and detox your indoor air.

Dracaena Marginata brings a touch of the tropics in your home. The plant is not only available in the green Marginata variant but also as a bicolour. This plant with golden leaves will give your interior a slightly different accent. Dracaena loves a to be in a light place.

The dracaena is easy to care of, if you water the dracaena once a week, it will be sufficient. It doesn't like standing in the air of open doors or windows. They can clean the indoor air by removing formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylen, found in carpet shampoos, waterproofing agents, adhesives, oven cleaners, printing inks and varnishes.

So as part of our New Year's resolutions we should all look at our homes and offices to see can we improve our air and mental health by adding greenery and houseplants in to our lives.
