A wood for every room

Wednesday, 4th March, 2020 4:40pm

Hardwoods can add character and opulence to the home and any DIY projects being carried out.

However, it can be hard to know what wood to go for given the variety of styles out there. Cork-based Quality European Hardwoods is often asked this question with Garry Tomlins saying that hardwoods look spectacular with a natural finish.

He said: “They have the practical advantage of being hardwearing and endure the rigours of family life. Because of their density and strength, hardwoods will not bruise or dent as easily as softwoods. Properly chosen, hardwoods can survive a lifetime, or three!

“Finishing with a lacquer, varnish or oil-based product highlights the beautiful wood grain leaving you with a low maintenance surface.

Whilst hardwoods can be more expensive than the pines, firs and spruces frequently specified by builders and architects, woods such as ash and beech, linden and poplar are surprisingly competitive. They can be painted, stained or left in their natural state to give you that designer look.”

Garry said that for worktops, shelving, tables and bespoke furniture pieces other hardwoods such as cherry, maple, sapele and dark red meranti offer rich hues and luxuriant tones. When used in staircases for example, a combination of beautiful oak, beech or walnut steps, spindles and handrails with contrasting painted risers and stringers add that extra wow factor.

Outside the home, timbers such as larch, iroko and robinia are suitable for cladding, decking and garden furniture.

“Our magnificent green oak beams are suitable for construction projects such as pagodas and other framework structures and robinia is highly durable and will last more than 50 years in the ground untreated,” explained Garry.

Quality European Hardwoods has hardwoods for every application.

He continued: “We supply to the trade and public. Our experts will be pleased to advise you on your project, however big or small. Our resident carpenter will offer to cut, plane and finish your choice of hardwood to your specification or even build you a staircase of your dreams.”

“It is important to remove carbon from the atmosphere as well as reduce new carbon emissions going into the atmosphere.

Wood achieves both objectives. At Quality European Hardwoods we are conscious of our environmental responsibility which is why we source our wood from sustainably managed forests,” Garry concluded.
