Counselling course kicking-off

Wednesday, 6th February, 2019 5:00pm

Are you interested in a change in career?

Cork Counselling Services is launching a new Foundation in Counselling & Personal Development Course, commencing in early March and running until summer. It will appeal especially to those who wish to develop people skills in work or private life.

In addition, it prepares participants or acts as a taster for entry into professional counselling courses. Spread over ten weeks, the course includes facilitated group work.

The method of training is personal and experiential and very different to the kind of academic learning that many people know from their school days. People skills are taught interactively in a fun and supportive atmosphere. You learn from your colleagues on the course as well as from the highly experienced tutors.

Cork Counselling Services Training Institute is one of the country’s longest standing education centres in the area of counselling and personal development. It was founded in the early 1980s and was one of the first centres in the country to provide a professional counselling and crisis intervention service to the community regardless of their finances, religious beliefs, race, sexual orientation or educational background.

It has been situated at 7, Fr Mathew Street for most of that time, and is now busier than ever. The trainers are practicing counsellors working within recognised codes of ethics and professional practice.

The service is a registered charity and a not-for-profit organisation. It is also a social enterprise - an organisation that applies commercial strategies towards advancing social ends. To support its effort in making counselling affordable to all, it also undertakes the profitable work of providing accredited professional training to would-be therapists and to those interested in personal development. The profits go directly to the counselling service at community level.

The training enterprise is exciting in that it has attracted degree level university accreditation from Coventry University for one of its programmes. The centre has also received the validation of IACP, the largest counselling professional body in Ireland, and is one of its longest standing training centres.

It has almost 100 students learning to become professional counsellors.
