It's looking good for Lyra

From hometown shows to working with megastar David Guetta, Rochestown singer Lyra is everywhere.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, Lyra talks about her roots, the songwriting process and memories of home.

Lyra is finding great success with her new single ‘Never Let Go’. A perfect blend of dark electronic pop, Lyra’s creativity manifests itself in songs, stories and art. The singer has been musically inclined for as long as she can remember.

“My family love a good party and I would always remember having something ready, hoping I would be asked to sing. I would be in and out to the bathroom practicing and waiting for my moment!”

Drawing comparisons to Kate Bush and Florence + The Machine and citing influences such as Enya, Sia and Lykke Li, Lyra finds her emotions often work their way into her songwriting.

“I’ve recently had my heart broken and the songs are just flowing out of me - it’s weird. It’s like my heart just wants to tell the world how its feeling.”

Lyra’s talent has afforded her exciting opportunities to work in LA and write for David Guetta.

“Writing for David Guetta’s project was so much fun - working and writing a different sound to my own.”

She’s even jetting off to musicians’ paradise Nashville.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am for Nashville, I’ve never been and to be invited over to work is really, really cool. It’s so famous for music. I just can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Now based in the UK, having just played Cork’s Cyprus Avenue last month Lyra reflects on her favourite memories of the city.

“When I was younger, my dad would take us walking around The Lough and it’s such a happy time that’s always stuck in my mind. But I do have to say coming home for my first show in Cork and seeing my poster stuck up around town was pretty memorable too!”

And what’s next for the rising star?

“I’m writing as much as I can - I have so much I want to say and aside from performing live, writing is just my favourite thing! I’ve got more gigs to be announced shortly and also some festivals. I’m also planning on putting another song out very soon too - so keep an eye and an ear out!”

Lyra’s new song ‘Never Let Go’ is out now on Polydor Records. Keep up with Lyra on social media @thisislyra.
