Old stomping ground for Mrs Brown

Wednesday, 19th February, 2020 3:54pm

After years of suprise global success, Mrs Brown makes her long awaited return to the stage in Cork, years after making her debut in the Everyman. She may be a Dub through and through, but it was in Cork that she first trod the boards.

Speaking about the upcoming run in the Marquee this summer, creator and star Brendan O’Carroll said: “I can’t wait. It’s going to be a cracker. You’ve a lot more latitude in the Marquee to give it a complete lash.

“Whereas in the studio, you’re kind of restricted because, you can give it a lash, but you know half of it is going to be cut out, so there’s no point in doing it. So you just do the bits you know won’t be cut out. But when we’re doing it live in the Marquee, I’ll be able to go full hell for leather,” he said.

The show is famous for its improvisational moments, which often see it go wildly off script, resulting in hilarious moments that often leave the audience guessing and the cast in stitches.

Though it has been some years since Mrs Brown graced the stage on Leeside, Brendan said the character has decades-old history with Cork city. Brendan said: “Would you believe, it’s actually not Mrs Brown’s first time coming to Cork; the first time that Mrs Brown was ever performed was in the Everyman Theatre. The live show premiered there, but we haven’t performed in Cork in years.”

Long before she became a household name, Brendan brought the character to Cork, citing the honesty of Cork audiences as a reason why they make an ideal test audience.

“It’s quite simple, Cork audiences are the most honest audiences you’ll ever get. If it’s not funny, they’ll tell you it’s not funny. And if it’s funny, they’ll laugh,” continued Brendan. “If it’ll work in Cork, it’ll work anywhere.”

The character has garnered huge success in over the past ten years. Since the sitcom’s debut in 2011, 'Mrs Brown’s Boys' has won five BAFTAs, four National Television Awards, three TV Choice Awards, a host of other television awards. The character has since made the leap into to comedy talk show host with 'All Round to Mrs Brown’s', which continues to achieve record breaking viewing figures.

Since returning to the stage, 'Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Live Show' has broken box office records across the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

However when Brendan debuted the character, he had no idea that Mrs Brown would reach such a wide international appeal.

“I would love to be able to tell you that I had a plan, and that everything is going according to plan, but I had no idea. I had no idea it was going to be this big, I had no idea it would move off the radio. It was supposed to be a five minute thing, over two weeks on the radio. It ended up being 460 episodes long.

“And then it was Dennis Desmond (founder of MCD) who said to me ‘listen, write this for a play and we’ll put it on in the Gaiety.’ So we wrote the play, tried it out in Cork. It worked in Cork, so we knew it would work in the Gaiety. And then it ran in the Gaiety for 16 weeks sold out. And Mrs Brown has been going ever since!”

'Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Live Show' will take place in the Marquee on Friday 12 June at 8pm, and Saturday 13 June at 2pm and 8pm. An additional performance was recently announced, taking place on Sunday 14 June at 2pm.
