Simply Star quality with Simply Red

Friday, 8th July, 2016 2:21pm

If you can throw your mind back that far, you will remember Top 30 Hits on RTE, and the song ‘Fairground’ sitting pretty at number one on the Irish charts.

For the die-hard followers of Mick Hucknell and band, it was simply a night to remember. Playing to an almost sold out show down on Centre Park Road, the atmosphere was amazing as a seasoned crowd turned out for a good Saturday night to see Simply Red play Live at The Marquee 16.

Fans couldn’t speak highly enough of him, obvious allegiance to the red-haired lead singer hadn’t waned over the years.

Mick took to the stage in leather pants, and proceeded to belt out the classics: ‘Precious Love’, ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’, ‘Holding Back The Years’ and so forward.

As Hucknell got stuck into the show’s setlist, it’s surprising how much Simply Red has contributed to the music scene of the 90s.

‘Keep Holding On’, ‘Star’, ‘Money’s Too Tight To Mention’ and the ultimate Simply Red hit, that people, who either love or hate the band, cannot not hum along to the smash hit ‘Fairground’.

With an encore of ‘Something’s Got Me Started’, Mick and band got the crowd started from start to finish, and left them with a feeling of simpler times.

It was the best performance to be seen in the Marquee in a few years. Mick still has a great voice, which made the crowd want more of the hour and a half performance.
