Street food in Cork has been boosted by the opening of the first speciality bao bun restaurant in the city.

Bao Boi, run by Greenes Restaurant and Cask executive chef Bryan McCarthy, opens its doors today 7 December, and specialises in steamed Taiwanese-Korean-style bao buns.

McCarthy, whose cooking takes its influence from Asian flavours and techniques, said: “The concept of Bao Boi is an Asian-inspired fast food restaurant with a conscience.

“It’s a takeaway offering flavoursome, fresh, nutritious, local food in-season and as organic in so much as our growers can supply. A takeaway that supports the local economy. The Barrack Street area is undergoing exciting regeneration and I believe Bao Boi will complement existing businesses and what is to come.”

Bao bun fillings include Wagyu beef, buttermilk chicken and featherblade beef and are created with local Cork produce.

The Bao Boi opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 12.30-10.30pm.

Bao Boi is located at 128 Barrack Street. Follow Bao Boi on Twitter and Facebook @BaoBoiCork for news.
