Bell X1 still got it after 20 years

Monday, 18th June, 2018 12:00am

I won’t lie, I was surprised to hear Bell X1 had been doing the rounds for over 20 years and had even graced the stage of our beloved legendary venue Sir Henrys once upon a time. But here we all are, 20 years later and still going strong.

The last time I saw them was over 10 years ago, with about 80 other people in the back room of De Barras of Clonakilty, so I was eagerly looking forward to this gig at Live at the Marquee. I had also heard that this was going to be a bit of a greatest hits gig, as part of their 20 year anniversary shows, which did make me a little happier.

You always feel that Paul Noonan was born to be a frontman. Just has that way about him, a stage presence that others don’t have, but he does it so well.

‘Bad Skin Day’, ‘Velcro’, and ‘Alphabet Soup’ were all highlights, and there were smiles all around when Noonan belted out the first lyrics of ‘Flame’.

For the encore, the Kildare band performed a brilliant cover of David Bowie’s ‘80s classic ‘Let’s Dance’ and finished off with their own classic ‘Rocky Took a Lover’.

For me, definitely one of the best I’ve seen at the Marquee. I won’t leave it so long next time…
