No removal yet of needle bin

Wednesday, 9th January, 2019 5:04pm

A needle bin on Wellington Road is still a sore point for residents in the area.

Locals living on and near the road have lobbied gardaí and politicians for the bin to be removed for more than a year.

A St Luke’s community forum on Monday heard how it was meant to be removed before Christmas but is still there.

Locals want it removed as they feel it is attracting more drug use to the area.

Superintendent Mick Comyns, who was at the meeting, told residents that gardaí were informed that the needle bin was to be removed in December and he couldn’t give a reason as to why this hadn’t happened yet.

He told the Cork Independent that he has no opinion on whether the needle bin stays or goes, but said that needle bins are put in areas where they are needed by the Drugs Task Force and it is up to them to review their locations.

Fine Gael Cllr Joe Kavanagh asked that the issue be kept on the agenda for the next meeting, if the bin hasn’t been removed in the meantime.
