Stories of WWII women reimagined

Wednesday, 9th January, 2019 5:04pm

A play shining a light on the stories of women during World War II is set to be performed in Youghal next week.

‘The Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of WWII’ recalls stories of bravery, sacrifice and love from the lives of women during WWII. The performance is set to come to The Mall Arts Centre in Youghal at 7.30pm on 15 January.

The play by Mary Moynihan, Deirdre Kinahan, Fiona Bawn Thompson and Paul Kennedy is inspired by WWII women such as Mary Elmes, a Cork woman who was the first Irish person honoured as ‘Righteous Among Nations’ for her work saving Jewish children from the Nazi gas chambers during World War II.

Other figures covered in the performance include Ettie Steinberg, the only female Jewish Irish citizen known to have been murdered in Auschwitz, and Marta Hillers, who wrote a book detailing her experiences of how she and over one million other women were raped and abused by soldiers during the last days of the war.

The performance is followed by a post-show discussion with the artists and invited guest speakers.

Tickets are €12/€10 concession and are available from
