It’s crystal: swing when you're winning

Wednesday, 13th March, 2019 4:47pm

Love was in the air last Saturday night when Crystal Swing’s Mary Burke celebrated 30 years of marriage to her husband Michael in style.

A large attendance was treated to a night to remember at the Lisgoold Community Centre where the happy couple received a special marriage blessing from Deacon Eddie Mulhare.

Food, music, song and dance went on into the early hours of Sunday morning with Mary and her son Derek and daughter Dervla of Crystal Swing making a special stage appearance.

Other musicians on the night were father and son duo Patrick and Conor O’Sullivan, while Mary’s young nephew Dylan Murray also gave an outstanding performance.

“The party was great. For some strange reason I always wanted to mark the thirtieth anniversary. Thank God we’re both in good health and we were able to be with so many family members on the night,” Mary told the Cork Independent.

It was love at first sight for Mary and Michael who met at a dance in Fermoy in 1985, and before long, were engaged to be married.

“We’ve climbed many mountains together and have gone through the main parts of our lives married to each other and rearing our family. All of a sudden here we are 30 years later and we’re stronger than ever. I couldn’t be happier really,” said Mary.

For Mary and Michael, family has always been at the heart of their lives, something to which Mary attributes the success of the family band Crystal Swing.

Mary said: “We were very lucky that it was a family unit and my husband was part and parcel of the whole thing. He traveled with us and he did sound for us at a lot of gigs, so I was very fortunate to have Michael with me and it was great for Derek and Dervla too.”

With grandchildren Paul and Hannah now part of the musical family, Mary hopes that the young ones will continue their proud musical tradition.

“We won’t push it on them, but when Dervla sings to her two little children, their eyes light up. I suppose with family like us, they can’t really escape,” she said.

Mary’s son Derek will feature alongside Dana and Senator David Norris, among others, in the upcoming six week travel series ‘Celebrity Globetrotters’ which starts today (Thursday) on RTÉ 1.
