Wednesday, 10th April, 2019 4:49pm

One of Cork’s most senior gardaí is due to hang up his cap for the final time in the next few weeks.

Superintendent Charlie Barry is retiring from the force with many taking the chance at a Cork City Joint Policing Committee meeting to praise him for his work with An Garda Siochána.

Chief Superintendent Barry McPolin said, at Monday’s meeting, that he was a pleasure to work with.

“40 years of service is not to be sneezed at and there is no doubt about it, he will be missed. He has been very loyal and he has a great energy,” he added.

Chief Executive of Cork City Council Ann Doherty wanted to wish him well for the next chapter of his life. “Thank you for your service from the executive team in Cork City Council,” she said.

Chair of the meeting Cllr Chris O’Leary wished him well as did other councillors.

Fianna Fáil’s Tony Fitzgerald jested: “I don’t know how a Blackrock man ended up a North Mon man.”

He added: “I would like to pay tribute to Charlie. We went to school together and I want to wish him well.”

Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “Can I wish Charlie, his wife and family every success in his retirement. He has been an extraordinary member of An Garda Síochána.”
