Shrubbery thuggery

Wednesday, 5th June, 2019 5:08pm

Over 150 plants that were pulled up by vandals in Tramore Valley Park have been replanted.

Fine Gael Councillor Deirdre Forde described the act, which took place on Tuesday night, as “mindless and beyond wasteful” and expressed her hope that nothing like it would happen again.

“I hope that Cork City Council and the gardaí can all work together to try to stamp this out as quickly as possible. This is a wonderful amenity for everybody and to have a few mindless idiots destroy it, I'm horrified and heartbroken over it,” Cllr Forde told the Cork Independent.

The new 70 hectare park, which was officially opened last month, is built on the site of the former Kinsale Road landfill which operated from 1963 to 2009.

Gardaí have been made aware of the incident.

“We're going to have to start hammering the message home that this costs us all,” continued Cllr Forde.

“This is people's hard earned money. Having to repair it now will cost more money which could be spent somewhere else like a new footpath somewhere or upgrading roads.

“Whoever did this, did it with malicious intent and this cannot be tolerated. Somebody might have seen them. Somebody knows who it is,” the newly elected city councillor concluded.
