'Who ignored Mikey’s cry for help?'

Friday, 9th August, 2019 10:18am

A pony which is suspected to have been used as dog bait has a long way to go to recover but it’s looking good.

That’s the latest on Mikey, a miniature pony, who was found this week by a member of the public on the northside of Cork city and who phoned the equine charity My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR) to help.

In a social media post MLHR said that his wounds have been gently cleaned and his stable has been completely cleaned out so there will be no infection.

“Our vet came…to check on him, all good so far. He’s very sore but so trusting. His little happy face when he saw his food brought tears to our eyes.

"This little boy has a long way to go but it’s looking good. We wish he knew the support and well wishes he’s getting from all over the country and beyond.”

Mikey was found earlier this week with deep rope burns, old and new dog bites, cuts and bruises. MLHR Cork got to the scene along with the Department of Agriculture vet.

The MLHR team gently got Mikey into a horse box and slowly drove him back to its centre in Cobh.

Another social media post said: “Who let this happen? Who ignored Mikey’s cry for help?”

Donations to help with Mikey’s recovery can be made here.
