Speaking about topping the tally in Cork South Central, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said: “I think we ran an excellent campaign and I had an excellent team behind me. There has been a swing towards Sinn Féin nationally.”

He said there has been a huge appetite for change, not just in personalities but in policies too.

“I think it was a clear failure to deal with the housing crisis and the fact that a whole generation feel locked out of any potential of having a permanent home. It caused great frustration. I think when people heard Mary Lou McDonald and many others outlining Sinn Féin’s vision for them to be able to own their own home, quality healthcare and affordable childcare, it registered with people and people gave us their support. I hope now that this will give us the opportunity in delivering a government that can put in place these solutions and can deliver significant change,” he added.
