Cocaine and scales found in gear bag

Thousands of euro worth of cocaine was seized on Leeside yesterday after a man was spotted acting suspiciously.

Gardaí arrested the man in his 30s and seized €12,000 of suspected cocaine in Cork city yesterday shortly after 1pm while they were on patrol in the Summerhill North at the time.

The man was searched and was found to be in possession of suspected cocaine and weighing scales that was found in a gear bag he was carrying.

He was arrested and brought to Mayfield Garda Station where he is still being detained this morning under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. 

Speaking at Mayfield Garda Station, Superintendent Michael Comyns of the Serious Crime Investigation Unit in Cork city said: "Yesterday has been a busy day for Gardaí in Cork city. A suspected firearm was seized in the early hours of this morning and now suspected drugs worth €12,000.

“Over the last few days, our members have shown great dedication to communities throughout the country by assisting in any way possible. But during this challenging time, we are continuing to investigate serious crime and will be even more dedicated to protecting the communities we serve.”

The suspected drugs will be sent for analysis.
