Woman assaulted during burglary

A woman was assaulted during an aggravated burglary in Cork city this week.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a man in his 20s broke into a house in the Mahon area and when he was discovered by one of the homeowners, he preceded to assault her with a metal travel mug.

The man then fled the scene after he was disturbed by another member of the household.

A garda spokesperson said: “The woman, aged in her 50s, received injuries to her head. No property was taken from the premises. The man was later arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”

He has since appeared before the courts.
