Back to their roots

A local company has found an innovative way to serve its customers during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Roots Kitchen, which is owned and run by Donna O'Driscoll, had to close its kitchen when Government restrictions were announced but has recently re-opened, serving special takeaway deliveries to customers.

Last weekend the company ran a Movie Night Box so families or friends living together could enjoy some tasty treats with a twist. The box contained Roots’ nachos, bang bang chicken skewers and Oreo and white chocolate fudge Roots brownies as well as cookie dough so customers could whip up cookies in their own kitchen. Serving four, Roots Kitchen delivered the box to customers’ doors and adhered to strict HSE guidelines.

Donna said: “As with a lot of food businesses, we had to close due to the Covid-19 emergency. We had been brain storming for a few weeks to provide something fun and different. My parents looked after my children before the crisis and they are now cocooning so I had to be extra creative to ensure whatever we sold would be weekend-based only!”

Donna noticed a lot of couples and families were enjoying date nights in their kitchen, with children kept busy with movies.

“It’s a selection of treats and snacks, all made from scratch, and delivered to your door. We had the idea but we wanted to add that extra bit of thought and personality. So we have an added ‘guess the movie’ game with ten well known quotes and a favourite movie suggestion from one of the team on a little card. We are thrilled with how it’s been received and we’ll be adding other options as the weeks go - the staff and I are so appreciative of our customers supporting us!”

This weekend Roots Kitchen will be dishing up a taco night, with locally made soft corn tacos and a selection of ingredients including slow cooked pork with lemon and oregano. For desert, it’s double chocolate chip cookie! The box serves up to four and costs €40, including delivery. Available for Friday and Saturday night, to support the local business order your weekend treat on or visit the website, for more information.
