New name for Anglesea St

Wednesday, 18th November, 2020 5:43pm

Plans to rename Anglesea Street have not been forgotten, the Cork Independent can confirm.

Originally announced back in March by Cork City Council, the street is to be renamed as part the War of Independence centenary celebrations on Leeside.

Similar to the naming of the Mary Elmes Bridge, the public will get to choose the street’s new name.

Sinn Féin had previously submitted a motion calling for the street to be renamed in honour of Tomás MacCurtain.

The street is currently named in honour of Henry Paget, First Marquess of Anglesey, a British field commander in Wellington’s army over 200 years ago.

The name change is set to be discussed at City Hall on 30 November.
