So Last Season

Simple but super styles

Wednesday, 31st October, 2018 4:40pm

Do you ever look at Instagram style stars, or just people with a sophisticated-looking style in general, and wonder how with very simple pieces they seem to make a big style statement?
Some people can make even the simplest outfit of what appears to be just a jumper and jeans look good but if you dissect the look closely enough, you’ll see there are certain styling tricks that elevate their look to another level.

Firstly, pay attention to the colours you’re wearing. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - you really can’t go wrong with great neutral colours like navy, cream, tan and black for all your failsafe fashion pieces and you can use accessories to add bright flashes of colour. Accessories really are key when it comes to making our wardrobe super stylish and we all probably have these pieces in our wardrobes but don’t give them the credit they deserve.

The first thing I never leave the house without is jewellery and while I do love the odd statement piece, you can create a more subtle impact by layering light gold and silver pieces. Accessorize, Betty and Biddy and Topshop are my go-to places for this kind of layered effect pieces.

Sometimes a little flash of metallic is all you need to give your knitwear a sophisticated edge. I know it’s hardly revolutionary to say but a leather belt in tan or black can add the finishing touches to your outfit. They look good with jeans and a blouse or with a roll neck and midi skirt and above all they’re functional. I like to tuck knitwear into them if I’m layering over a dress or skirt.

Another item which I’ve just started getting really into is a classic silk scarf. I actually think someone needs to do a little workshop on how to use a silk scarf because there are so many different ways to wear them.

I either let it hang in quite a loose knot or I wrap it around my neck a few times and tie a little knot to the front. It instantly adds colour, print and glamour to your look and I must say it makes me feel like I should be sitting outdoors drinking coffee and eating pastries in a Parisian café.

I’ve also become quite taken with statement buttons at the moment and I love a blazer with a big gold button or a blousey top with some tortoiseshell ones.

I recently purchased an orange roll neck with large white buttons on the neckline and it really changes the look of the jumper from simple to an almost retro look. What’s even better is that buttons are something you can easily change yourself so if you spot some nice tailoring explore the possibilities if changing the buttons to make it even more special.

On the subject of tailoring, you really can’t get more sophisticated than tailored pieces for every day wear. Invest in a blazer, there’s even some great options in the mid-season sales at the moment.

Add some knitwear to it if you’re feeling a chill or for even more style points layer under a tailored Cromby coat. I’m especially loving matching your knitwear colour to your blazer and then adding maybe a leopard print silk scarf to it to break up the colours a bit.

Suits don’t only have to be for workwear. I’ve just recently spotted a check print suit in Dunnes Stores which could be made a bit more casual by adding trainers and a t-shirt or a plain knit with white boots. All you need then is to find someone to take your perfect OOTD photo.
