So Last Season

When trends come full circle

Wednesday, 19th December, 2018 4:59pm

Well here we are, the last column of 2018, and where did that year go?

Now I’m not one really for resolutions and it actually feels a bit weird talking about resolutions in December but next year I really am determined to make better use of the clothes I have in my wardrobe.

I’m going to do a ruthless cull before Christmas in preparation and I would love if everything could possibly fit in one place.

I’m currently spread out over three houses with stuff being stored in my parents and my grandmother's house. Lots of this is just stuff I really will never wear again, so I just need to follow my own advice and get rid.

I know I’m ready for a much more pared back wardrobe as I’ve just in recent times been purchasing good basics and I recently purchased a pair of Dr Martens boots from Office.

Now they are a bit of an initial splurge at around €170 but I have been wearing them almost constantly since I bought them and I know they are so well made that I will have them for years.

I know this because I had a pair of these boots in secondary school and they were still in great condition years later. I probably should have held onto them because my shoe size hasn’t changed since then, so it just goes to show we should hang onto these types of timeless items.

Now it might seem like I’m having some form of sartorial, almost pre-life crisis as I’m returning to another trend from my youth, and that’s wearing leggings under dresses and skirts.

I wore leggings so much as a teen and in my early twenties that I could not bear to look at them for many years, but here I am in the winter of 2018 suddenly buying leather-look leggings and layering them under my favourite dresses.

I mean, really, what’s not to love? They’re practical, keep you warm and make your legs look super shapely.

Now I’ve seen two pairs which come highly recommended but are on opposite ends of the pricing spectrum.

Verso, which is online, has a great pair which come in black, navy and grey and cost only €15. These look like good quality and I would advise definitely trying these out if you are looking to dip your toe in the leggings look.

On the other side, we have the ones by Spanx which cost from about €95 and they also do a really nice biker style which has a button on the top so would be ideal if you’re brave enough to wear with a shorter top.

I am definitely not at that level of legging clad buttock exposure yet but realistically I probably never will. I’m more than okay with this.

The legging is so versatile and there are so many outfit options available to you when you embrace them.

Dresses over trousers was a big hit this year and it looks super sleek when done with leggings.

It’s also a great alternative to tights and is a nice warm layer when worn under button front midi dresses or slip dresses. It also breathes new life into longer kimono style jackets as you can wear them belted over leggings and a cami.

They also look great with a 'nice top' and there are some great longer styles around if you fancy a bit of length to your look.

Wear with heels, statement earrings and a one shoulder top to create a fab New Years Eve look worthy of the YSL runway.

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and chat to you in 2019!
