So Last Season

A low-rise forecast ahead

Wednesday, 16th January, 2019 4:55pm

I just realised that I never filled you in on our mini break to Lagos in Portugal.

How could I have created such a cliffhanger?

Firstly, I must say, if you can get away at all in January then do it!

It was such an absolute tonic and it made returning to work completely bearable knowing I’d be off again shortly and getting a bit of winter sun.

While it was lovely and sunny during the day, it did get quite nippy at night and while we certainly braved a few bottles of wine al fresco, I definitely packed my case with a warmer temperature in mind.

I’m normally pretty reserved when it comes to what shoes I’ll pack but in a moment of madness I threw in two pairs of sandals, one of which even had a bit of a heel for night time.

Needless to say, these weren’t even taken out of the case, and I wore trainers every night with my dresses.

It’s amazing how adaptable trainers can be and I have a white pair from Next with a gold glitter star on the side and they really just went with everything.

This was also helped by the fact that I was chilly and wanted to stay warm, so no matter what, those trainers were going to work for me.

My trusty leather jacket also really came into its own and it’s another piece I advise people to invest in because it really will work over every kind of outfit, and while it wasn’t too heavy to wear during the day, with the addition of a scarf it kept me warm at night also.

You may remember that this year I am trying to buy less and make more use of the pieces I already have because realistically, I probably have enough clothes to last me a lifetime.

I’m also really hoping to make more use of the accessories I have and I’m a big believer in the power of the accessory in being able to completely change the feel of an outfit.

With all this in mind, I couldn’t help but have a small little wander around the boutiques and markets of Lagos.

While a few places seemed to be closed for the season, I did manage to pick up some unusual gold earrings which I’m looking forward to wearing with my new Maria Tash piercing (I got my second one done after Christmas and they really are addictive) as well as a light scarf that features another addiction of mine…tassels.

All in all I feel like I made some thoughtful purchases and reigned in my spending. Pat on the back for me!

In other news, can we talk about the fact that denim forecasters, who are the powers that be that decide and predict what we will be wearing in the coming seasons, have said that low-rise jeans are making a comeback?

I was there in the hay day of the low rise jeans, think early 2000s and pop princesses like Britney and Christina with their washboard stomachs and let me tell you it is not a look I enjoy nor is it comfortable.

Wearing low-rise always leaves me with the feeling like I need to pull my pants up properly and especially after years of the comfort of high waisted jeans, it will seem like you’ve got a phantom waistband.

I’d much prefer to tuck my tummy into a pair of high waist jeans safe in the knowledge that my muffin top is comfortably ensconced in denim and not about to make an unwelcome appearance!
