So Last Season

Summer won't be long coming...

Wednesday, 20th March, 2019 4:30pm

I hope by now everyone has recovered after the bank holiday weekend and the shenanigans of St Patrick’s Day which, as I mentioned last week, was also conveniently my birthday weekend.

I actually had a really nice weekend as I headed down to Killarney for a night and went to a vintage and vino night market held in the Curious Cat café.

I picked up a pink vintage dress from one of the vendors there which I’ll put with my summer wardrobe stockpile.

It’s a cute cotton midi dress with pearl buttons that will look great with a denim jacket and trainers or espadrilles but I also think it could be easily dressed up with a pair of white heels.

It cost the princely sum of €20 and gives me the peace of mind of buying something that has been recycled. I’ll add it to the collection of my other vintage dresses that get pulled out every summer and that I’ve had for years.

When it comes to printed sun dresses, you really can’t beat vintage for brightly coloured and unusual prints. As vintage goes, dresses are an easy piece to buy and remember they can be easily altered if there are some elements to the garment that you need to have changed such as hem lengths.

When it comes to summer wardrobes, there are pieces that I wear time and time again and don’t need re-investment, such as denim jackets. I have a shorter one in a very bleached out, worn in look and then I have a longer, darker denim one. I’ve had both of these for years.

There are some items however that I will begin to pick up and stockpile in spring because even though the weather right now is a million miles from summer, all the best summer pieces are now on the shop floor. So while it might be hard to have lots of lovely summer bits that you can’t wear right now, you’ll be feeling so smug and summer-ready once the sun makes an appearance.

One thing I like to look out for now are espadrilles. The mixture of linen and cotton plus the closed toe means they work well both at home or on your sun holiday and are the perfect partner to summer dresses, shorts and t-shirts or for making your favourite pair of jeans look more sunny and fresh.

I have always bought my most comfortable espadrilles from H&M but get in there now to get the best ones. I have a flat, beige pair that lace around the ankles that will be making their way into the fourth summer with me and such is their comfort level and the way that they go with everything, that I fear the day they fall apart.

This year I might look for a wedge pair just to mix it up and give myself the option of a bit more height and I’ve seen a great metallic pair from Mint Velvet.

I’m also going on a sun holiday in May and need to seriously consider my swimwear options. I want something chic but also practical for splashing about in the pool and now really is the time to grab the best swimwear options.

I’m more focusing on one piece bathing suits than bikinis and I really love the stretchy, shirred fabric ones that I’ve been seeing a lot of at the moment. Penney’s have a really rather fetching dark green leopard print one while Topshop have a more earthy toned and low key one shoulder version.

Now all we need is sunny skies or a month in the south of France!
