Laragh, Owner

Why did you open Flamingo?

Flamingo opened its doors on 12 May this year. I always had passion for fashion and a head for business. I grew up in a family business and have always been aware of the rewards and sacrifices of being your own boss. So even as a busy working wife and mum of two, I decided to follow my dream, and Flamingo was born. A space that brought together fashion, fun and my all-time weakness: stationery and gifts!

Employment background?

It’s safe to say I love working with people! I’ve worked in many different areas over the years: travel, pharmacy, hospitality, marketing and social media and retail. My parents were an example to both me and my brother and their success in running a business and balancing family life have been an inspiration to me and gave me the push to become my own boss!

What is your day to day in Flamingo like?

Busy! Honestly since we’ve opened our doors, it’s been non-stop. There’s never a day off for a new businesses owner! If I’m not in store working, I’m buying new stock, planning our next event with the team or in the office doing the dreaded admin!

How many staff is there?

Currently the Flamingo team consists of the fab four: Alison, Janna, Lynnette and I. Of course there is always the massive support of our unofficial staff, my family! My husband Damian has fitted the shop out in his spare time; he has done everything from shop fittings to making our fabulous flower wall in store! My daughter Charlotte, 13, loves to come and help after school. I hope she will work with me in the shop one day in the future. Christian, 9, is always keen to help his dad out with any jobs in the shop, if he’s not run off to the sweet shop up the street!

Plans and hopes for 2019?

We have lots of plans for 2019! We want to keep Flamingo a fun shopping space with on trend and affordable fashion. We hope to extend our plus size styles available in store along with some new labels. We are planning plenty more events and we hope to have our online store up and running in 2019 which will offer fashion and gifts. So keep an eye on our social media @lovetheflamingo for all the latest updates.

Alison Keating, Visual Merchandiser/

I have 20 years of fashion retail experience. I always worked hard to get to the next level and before long found myself in management. I specialized in training and development. Working with Flamingo allows me to use my skills and training while enjoying my passion for fashion!

What is your day to day in Flamingo like?

Working in Flamingo really varies; no two days are the same! My role encapsulates everything from delivering great service, styling, processing deliveries, merchandising our amazing new stock and dressing our windows as our seasons change.

Favorite thing about working at Flamingo?

Firstly, it has to be working with the girls. The team may be small but it’s mighty! We all bring different skills to Flamingo which shows diversity and balance. There is no hierarchy in our team, we all encourage and support one another. This is why we are a successful business and a great team. Seeing the brand and Flamingo to go from strength to strength is an amazing feeling and motivates me to drive the business further.

Janna Mullaney, Social, Events & Marketing

I have a background in fashion retail management and PR. After college, I joined a Cork-based PR agency working with a number of different businesses. I then went to retail management with Pulse Accessories and later, the Kilkenny shop. In 2018 I decided to freelance in social media and events for small and new businesses. Working with Flamingo allows me to use my media and business qualifications while still connecting with fashion, my first love.

What is your day to day in Flamingo like?

The exciting thing is my days in Flamingo really vary. I still support the sales team and work in the store one day a week, this way I get to see all the amazing new stock, connect customers and gather content. Other days it could be a shoot for the Cork Independent, planning our next event, creating our social posts or working on the next launch like our new loyalty cards which are a great way to reward our customers.

Favorite thing about working at Flamingo?

Firstly it is has to be the FlaminGALS! Working with such fab ladies has been a great experience. Helping to build a brand and social platform that celebrates women of all shapes, ages and backgrounds is amazing. Our events are always a chance to work with other local and inspiring women in business. As a plus size gal, it’s been empowering to make social content that shows real women enjoying fashion.

Lynnette Fitzgerald, Sales & Styling Advisor

My background employment has always been connected to retail and customer service. I have 15 years’ experience in this sector. My previous role was a bridal wear consultant; I just love helping people look and feel their best. My keen eye for shape and colour enables me to advise Flamingo customers on how to enhance their shape and style.

What is your day to day in Flamingo like?

I love how every day is different, that’s the fun of retail. A day can be everything from merchandising the store, helping customers, processing deliveries and getting orders ready for customer nationwide.

Favorite thing about working at Flamingo?

What sets Flamingo apart from other stores is the beautiful store and genuine, helpful employees, if I do say so myself! Our variety of clothing means we have something to suit every niche in the market and the honesty portrayed in our online content to the customers means you can see how any item suits your shape, colouring or style.
