Name and position: Eithne Buckley, Matchmaker at Twoheartsmeet Dating agency

Age: 54

Lives: Charleville

Family: Partner Dan and three grown kids Sean, Sinead and Ciara

Pets: Two rescue dogs called Jess and Whitey

Favourite thing about Cork: The English Market.

Least favourite thing about Cork: So many areas still have poor mobile coverage.

One thing you’d change about Cork: Improve mobile coverage!!

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

I wanted to be a librarian. I loved reading and thought I’d be able to read loads of books while getting paid for it!

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

In the 90’s I was co-owner of a country grocery shop and I also worked in General Semiconductors in Macroom before it closed down in 2001. I’ve also worked in offices over the years. I set up Twoheartsmeet with my partner Dan in 2011. I’ve completed several courses over the last few years including counselling, life coaching and hypnotherapy.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

Putting successful matches together. There’s nothing like it when I turn on the Twoheartsmeet phone and see a text from someone I’ve matched and he or she is so grateful for sending someone special their way. It’s actually very humbling to be able to introduce couples who end up finding happiness together in a committed relationship.

What motivates you?

Bringing happiness to couples who would not have met if they hadn’t joined Twoheartsmeet.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?

When I was in my teens I suffered from an eating disorder, so I would’ve said ‘Don’t suffer in silence. Get yourself some professional help’.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

Something involving customer services, as I love working with people.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

In life, getting over the shyness that plagued me as a child. Also, having the pleasure of being a parent. Career-wise, setting up Twoheartsmeet.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

My late father, who was still driving into his 90s. Also, my partner Dan, who helped me become more confident and assisted me in setting up Twoheartsmeet in 2011.

What is the life dream now?

To continue successfully matching couples, to keep peace of mind at all times and to be continually grateful for the blessings that have come my way in life.

How do you switch off?

I play solitaire on my phone; it takes my full concentration and it’s impossible to think about anything except completing the game in the shortest time possible. Reading is also a great way to completely switch off. I’m currently reading ‘Accidental Rebel’ by Pat Falvey.

What is your favourite Cork memory?

In the 1970s our mother used to park in Grattan Street car park and go shopping to O’Flynn’s Butchers and Bradley’s supermarket on North Main Street. Us kids would help to carry the shopping back to the car, and as a treat she would give us money to buy sweets in Henrietta’s shop on the corner.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

Since we moved to north Cork a few years ago we take the dogs walking to Doneraile Park outside Mallow quite frequently. It’s so picturesque and peaceful, and there are both long and short walks, including wooded areas and streams.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

‘We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an art but a habit’ by Aristotle.

When are you at your happiest?

Spending quality time with the family. I also enjoy my own company, especially listening to the birds chirping while cycling on quiet country roads that have virtually no traffic.

Any regrets?

I don’t believe in regrets. I am what I am because of the ups and downs I’ve gone through in life, and any mistakes I made often turned out to have a silver lining.

What is your hidden talent?

I play the air guitar really well!

What might we be surprised to know about you?

Even though I’m a matchmaker, I’m not really very romantic! For example, I don’t like the commercialism around Valentine’s Day. Romance to me is small daily gestures like a hug or a cup of tea in bed!
