Hollywood star Colin Farrell has been forgiven for his IFTA gaffe by the people of Castletownbere, whom he forgot to thank during his award acceptance speech. The picturesque town played host to the filming of 'Ondine' which won four awards at the 7th Annual Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs). Farrell starred in the film and won the film award for Actor in a Lead Role.

A man accused of playing a part in the country's largest ever drug seizure has been found not guilty in London. John Edney was cleared by a jury at London's Blackfriars Crown Court of playing a role in a plan to smuggle cocaine into Ireland in July 2007.

Gotany old footage of Cork? Anything from an old hurling match to a wedding would be of interest to a voluntary group in Blackpool who restore and digitise old films clips of Cork. The volunteers have already archived over 1,200 local Cork City and County clips.

 
Crystal Swing: The next big thing?

An East Cork family band has been making waves recently on YouTube, where they are clocking up huge amounts of hits in a very short amount of time. Videos of Crystal Swing songs 'He Drinks Tequila' and 'The Hucklebuck' have spread rapidly on social networking site Twitter, even becoming a trending topic on the site along with Munster rugby star Jerry Flannery, the iPad, and US federal reserve officer Ben Bernanke. The band has been played on Newstalk's Sean Moncrieff show as a result of the Twitter coverage.

 
East Cork charity grows apace

An East Cork charity that was established in 2003 is currently fundraising for a centre that will provide full time accommodation for young people over 18 who find themselves in a time of crisis. Muintir Mhuire, run by Fr Donal O'Callaghan and Cairde Muintir Mhuire, began in the Shanagarry/Garryvoe area in Monacraigh Cottage and catered for a group of just six people. However, a larger centre is necessary, according to the group, and a six acre site has been procured at Ballybutler near Ladysbridge.

 
ESB "spinning" flood response

A councillor representing residents of the Middle Parish has described the ESB's response to its role in the floods as total "spin" aimed at "fobbing off" the people of Cork. Fine Gael Cllr Emmet O'Halloran told the Cork Independent that the ESB still had a lot of questions to answer and the problem would not go away for them.

 
Criticism of transport system

Nine pedestrians were killed on Cork City streets between 2002 and 2007. The figures were announced at last Monday's City Council meeting, at which the city's transport system was heavily criticised by councillors. They were responding to an interim report on transport issues in the city, which highlighted issues and concerns of people coming in and out of the city and the modes of transport they use.

 
Mayfield pub posters to highlight mental health issues

Posters and beer mats are to be circulated to pubs in Mayfield to raise awareness and outline supports for people who are depressed and/or suicidal. The project is the result of the Club Cork Alcohol and Drugs Awareness Training Programme, which saw 300 people from the city taking part. Publicans from Mayfield and the surrounding area also participated in the training course to increase their awareness of the negative effects of alcohol and drug misuse.

 
Cork coffee premium priced

A recent survey conducted by Newstalk radio has found that Cork has some of the highest coffee prices in Ireland. Cork comes in just after Belfast at €2.62 per standard size cup of Americano compared to €2.84 in Belfast. Cork was more expensive than Galway (€2.53) and Dublin (€2.20).

 
Kick starting the year of the golden tiger

This week, the Ambassador Chinese Restaurant celebrated the Year of the Golden Tiger, with an event held at its Cook Street premises. Guests were invited to the Ambassador, one of Cork's most established restaurants to celebrate the Chinese New Year, a festival which lasts for 15 days and this year began on 14 February.
