Cup boost for Higgins family

The brother of injured toddler Zac Higgins got a welcome lift this week thanks to Ringmahon Rangers’ win in the Donie Forde Cup Final.

Max Higgins, whose brother Zac was seriously injured in a hit and run incident two weeks ago, lifted the cup with club captain Derek O'Sullivan at Turner's Cross on Tuesday evening, after Ringmahon beat Avondale United 2-0 in the final.

The Higgins family have endured a torrid couple of weeks with confirmation that Zac has been diagnosed with a diffuse axonal brain injury (DAI).

The two year old was awoken from an induced coma early last week and had remained in a vegetative state until he came around on Friday evening. Zac’s mother Aishling told ‘The Neil Prendeville Show’ on RedFM that the injured infant faces a very long road ahead.

“His eyes were open but he wasn’t there,” said Aisling. “It was horrendous; the worst news we could have gotten. We’re praying and praying that we’ll get a miracle. It’s all a waiting game. It’s all time,” she added.

Zac is being cared for in Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin after being trasferred there from CUH after the incident which took place on 25 March.

A 17 year old male arrested and questioned in relation to the accident has since been released.

A GoFundMe page to help with Zac’s medical care, has raised just under €39,000 so far. Donate at www.gofundme.com/zac-higgins-appeal-fund.
