Clothes Throw a huge success

A group of Slimming World members shed more than just pounds recently for a charity clothes throw.

Members of Slimming World Ballincollig raised €3,420 for the Irish Cancer Society when the rugby club and Lakewood Slimming World groups collected 114 bags of clothes, shoes, homeware, toys and accessories as part of the ‘Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw’.

The bags have been donated to the Irish Cancer Society shop on Castle Street as part of the national fundraising campaign, which this year goes ‘gold’ as Slimming World celebrates its 50th birthday.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Each of the filled bags is worth around €30 to the charity, and this year’s campaign is aiming to beat last year's total of €240,000.

Sandy Vaughan, who runs the two groups in Ballincollig said: “I can’t quite believe how many bags we managed to collect; I knew my members were amazing, but I didn’t expect such an incredible level of effort – wow! I’m so proud of my members and for literally throwing their weight behind the Clothes Throw for the second year in a row. They really do put their heart into everything they do. Whether it’s their weight loss, supporting each other each week in group, or raising money for charity, they continue to blow me away!”

Slimming World Ballincollig takes place on Thursday evenings at 5.30pm and 7pm at the Rugby Club and on Friday mornings at 9.30am at Lakewood Sports Complex. For more information contact Sandy on 086-0625315.
