A new free event, the Cork Carnival of Science, will take place on 22 and 23 June in Fitzgerald's Park.

Numbers add up for new carnival

More than 10,000 people are set to flock to Fitzgerald’s Park this June for a new carnival promoting science, maths, technology and engineering.

The Cork Carnival of Science will take place from 22-23 June and will be a massive plus for families this summer with exhibitions, child-friendly activities, performances and workshops.

The first-time event will be free to attend and was confirmed at a Cork City Council meeting this week by Chief Executive Ann Doherty.

Speaking to councillors at Tuesday’s meeting, Ms Doherty said the event “is a free non-profit event for the public and aims to promote science, technology, engineering and technology through the provision of a fun activity programme”.

Ms Doherty said the event was expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors each day, and that food and beverages would also be available.

She added that the event plan had been circulated to the relevant Cork City Council departments and to the Gardaí, HSE, Bus Eireann, Civil Defence and St John’s Ambulance, and that all had agreed that the event go ahead.
