Soul in the City is back and it’s bigger!
For the third year running, the Soul in the City festival is returning to Cork this June Bank Holiday weekend.
The music and food festival returns to the Victorian Quarter from 31 May to 2 June for another weekend of soulful live music, mouth-watering soul food, fun and craic galore.
Following the success of Cork’s very own soul diva Karen Underwood and her shows at St Luke’s, she is returning to The Everyman with a full band for Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul to celebrate the life of Aretha Franklin.
Underwood is no stranger to Cork having moved here over 20 years ago, and has regularly played packed shows at some of the city’s best venues.
She says: “If you want to clap and sway and tap and finger-pop, this show is for you. I was born to learn from the legend that is Aretha how to feel music and express music unapologetically.”
The festival will also see a range of delicious, eclectic soul food served up by the rejuvenated Victorian Quarters’s mixture of independent traders, cafes, large hotels and bars.
Whether it’s a creole fish taco with chipotle sauce, a Louisiana-style gumbo, smothered pork chops with black-eyed peas and corn bread, a luxurious crimson cake synonymous with the American south or a Mississippi mud pie, it doesn’t get more southern than Soul in the City.
Friday at the festival will focus on the ‘after work’ folk with early bird food.
Saturday will see the benefits of a bank holiday audience, while Sunday’s premier event is Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul at 8pm in The Everyman.
As Soul in the City are hoping to grow the soul food side of the festival this year, several talented chiefs will prepare a ‘soul’ dish of their choice, each chef incorporating the same key ingredients, with a winner selected by judges.
With delicious soul food, drinks and lots of live music across the Victorian Quarter, there’s something at Soul in the City for everyone!
Cork Independent is delighted to be media sponsor of the festival along with Cork’s 96FM.
