Bees love fuschias!

Fancy Barbara Windsor and Starwars in the garden?

We all love the bright colours of the beautiful wild fuchsia on the roads of West Cork and Kerry.

Gardeners love planting the elegant summer fuchsia plants in their patio pot and hanging basket because of their vibrant long lasting display of colour. It makes them one of Ireland favourite plants.

Fuchsia plants are one of the best plants to brighten up that dull corner. They thrive in both full sun and shade. A hanging baskets or patio pot of fuchsias will reward you until first frost, this could mean flowering till late November.

The fuchsia Buds of May range is a winner in any container or hanging basket. It’s a fantastic selection of early-flowering fuchsias which will bloom three to four weeks before other varieties. But this doesn't mean that they'll fade earlier! These wonderful plants will still be flowering up until the first frosts and look spectacular in hanging baskets or cascading from the edges of patio containers.

Our nursery has grown a few new and exciting varieties of fuchsia this year. The Starwars variety is getting a great response by all our team and customers. This is a designer's delight with glorious, cream-variegated foliage, flushed pink at the margin, followed by purple-centred, bright pink flowers.

All the fuchsias in Griffins are home-grown in our nursery, ensuring your fuchsia is very hardy for the unpredictable summers in Cork and Kerry.

The summer fuchsias love free draining soil and when we get a spell of dry weather, try not to leave them dry out. A lot of these plants will come back if our winters are mild like the last few years, but you need to be patient. They are slow to show growth in the spring.

We usually think they have not survived the winter. Leave them be and they can mushroom into the most beautiful healthy plant over a few days and thrive throughout the summer again.

Did you know the bees love fuchsias? Fuchsias bloom abundantly and each and every single blossom provides nectar for the bees. On a wet day, the nectar stays dry as the flower hang down, keeping the rain away from the nectar.
