Drivers urged to slow down

A local councillor has urged drivers to slow down, especially in housing estates.

Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy said that while talking to people at the doors during his re-election campaign, concerns were raised about how fast some drivers were travelling.

“There is a huge need for a campaign in this city asking drivers to slow down. We need to get the message out there asking people to slow down across the city. I met so many people who were afraid to send their kids to the local shop for fear that they would be knocked down,” said the southside councillor.

Meanwhile, at the same meeting, Cllr Oliver Moran with the Green Party spoke about the dangers of cycling in some parts of the city. He was commenting on a motion by former councillor Tim Brosnan asking for a cycleway between Glanmire, Dunkettle and Kent Station, which the council said including the new Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS).

Cllr Moran described the CMATS as an “ambitious report”.

“It includes a mile long uphill cycle from Silversprings to Mayfield so I find it hard to take the report seriously. There’s also been changes to lanes on Lower Glanmire Road which have made cycling on the road too dangerous,” Cllr Moran concluded.
