‘This is a disgrace’

Locals in Fermoy have expressed dismay after a large number of sharp tacks were found near one of Fermoy’s most popular tourist attractions.

A large handful of thumbtacks were found at the Knockananig reservoir in Fermoy, whose lake and woodland area is popular with tourists, walkers, nature lovers and occasionally anglers.

The discovery was made by Blackwater Triathlon Club in Fermoy, who wrote on social media that the objects were found spread around one of the entry/exit points to the water.

“Don't ask us why, but fair warning to all those who use Knockananig reservoir for recreational purposes,” they wrote.

“One of our club members went to a lot of effort to gather as many as possible but please be careful. Shame on whom ever is responsible.”

The old reservoir was previously known as the waterworks, and has been open to tourists for more than 20 years.

Fermoy Fianna Fáil Cllr Frank O’Flynn said he was aware of the reports but did not have further information.

“Knockananig reservoir is a lovely facility, and is used as a public amenity by many people in the local area and beyond. You very often get people who go walking there or sit near it, and on days where the weather is good people go there to have a picnic or explore the woodland.

“This is a disgrace and dangerous for anyone walking near or using the reservoir. I don’t know what the reasoning is behind it but whoever the culprit is, I hope they are found and face the full repercussions,” he said.
