UCC scientists go with their gut

Two UCC scientists have been hailed as the world’s top rated experts in their particular field.

Prof John Cryan and Prof Ted Dinan currently sit atop the global list of experts in microbiota, which is the study of communities of bacteria such as the bacteria in the gut.

The prolific scientists are credited with being the first to discover a direct link between a person’s mood and bacteria in their gut.

In 2017 the pair released a book called ‘The Psychobiotic Revolution: Mood, Food and the New Science of the Gut-Brain Connection’, in which they painstakingly research how food impacts psychological well-being.

The book has received massive praise from the scientific community and is seen by many as a game-changer in the field of biomedicine, with psychobiotics widely tipped to revolutionise the treatment of depression.

As well as Professors Cryan and Dinan, a further four UCC experts made the top 30 on the list, bringing the total to six UCC experts in the top 30 in the world in microbiota.
