Fr Gavin set for ordination

A Dublin priest is set to be ordained as the bishop of Cork & Ross this weekend.

The ordination for Fr Fintan Gavin, who has been a priest since 1991, will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Anne at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. It's the first ordination of a Catholic bishop in Cork since 1984 when Bishop John Buckley was ordained auxiliary bishop of the diocese.

Bishop Buckley’s resignation was accepted by Pope Francis, having reached the retirement age, last April and Fr Fintan Gavin, a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, was then appointed as his successor.

Born on the northside of Dublin, Fr Fintan Gavin is aged 53.

In attendance at the ceremony will be Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin, Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly SMA of Cashel and Emly and Bishop John Buckley.

There will also be representatives from each of the 68 parishes of the diocese.

The ceremony will be the first ordination in Cork to be live streamed at corkandross.org and will also be broadcast at Skibbereen Cathedral.
