Nevin elected vice chair with Democrats

Clonakilty woman Evie Nevin has been elected as Vice Chairperson of the Social Democrats.

The recent local election candidate was voted in by party members at its recent national conference. Ms Nevin said: “As a disabled woman, I felt it was important to have somebody at the table who understands the struggles of social isolation and dependency, the intricacies of the welfare system and living in rural Ireland. I look forward to working with our incoming Chairperson, Morgan Nolan over the next year.”

Commenting on Evie's selection, party co-leader, Roisín Shortall said: “These are very exciting times for our growing party. We've put down strong foundations in our first local elections with 19 fantastic new councillors and we're now very focused on contesting the next general election and getting more Social Democrats in the Dáil.

“Evie is an experienced activist and campaigner and she will bring great energy, skills and experience to our new national executive. We're very much looking forward to working with her and the rest of the party officers.”

Ms Nevin said she felt honoured to have been selected and was looking forward to building the party and creating a “fairer Ireland” where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
